The Virginia Natural Fish Company (VNFC) is supplied by the Virginia Aqua-Farmers Network (VAN). VAN is a new-generation cooperative enabling small aquaculture farmers, predominately in Southside Virginia, to supply locally-produced, quality fresh fish and prawns by pooling resources for production and marketing. VAN is committed to sustainability, and its products are raised locally in carefully constructed freshwater ponds without the use of herbicides, fungicides or algicides. This ensures that these well-managed ponds will not negatively impact the environment or cause pollution in surrounding waters. Our products are available to purchase online, at local farmers markets and other outlets. We are also available to supply restaurants interested in sourcing local, all natural ingredients.

VAN producers raise channel catfish, rainbow trout, hybrid striped bass, and freshwater prawns (shrimp), which are sold under the Virginia Natural Fish Company brand.

Channel Catfish: Available filleted and frozen,these fish have a firm-textured white meat and a mild flavor. They can be prepared in numerous ways. Catfish are available year-round.
Rainbow Trout: Available dressed or filleted and frozen , trout has a delicate flavor. It is delicious plain or enhanced with sauces or stuffing. Trout are harvested in April, processed and frozen and will be available as long as supplies last.
Hybrid Striped Bass: Coming in 2013.
Freshwater Prawns: These large freshwater shrimp tails have been individually quick frozen and sealed in one-pound bags. Prawns have a heavier shell, but a sweeter flavor and the consistency of lobster. They can be substituted for shrimp in recipes. Prawns are harvested in October and will be available as long as supplies last.
